Two Major Reasons Why Kids Should Not Have Cell Phones

   
As the generation becomes increasingly technologically savvy, more and more parents are willing to let their children have their very own cell phones. This is because they see only the advantages and positive implications that come along with their kids owning these handsets. What they fail to see is the effect these devices have to the entire welfare of their kids.
Merely Peer Pressure
There are many reasons why kids should not have cell phones and one of those concerns what psychologists call peer pressure. Researchers who did surveys on kids and cell phones have concluded that most children only ask for these devices from their parents because all their friends have one. For them, not owning one is tantamount to being the next social outcast at school. As such, they feel pressured to get a hold of their own cell phone so that they can be accepted by their friends and peers and thus be secured with their identity.
This mindset should be completely cut off from the children for them to have a healthy attitude towards each person’s individuality. They need to understand that being accepted by society is not the yardstick for identity and security. And any parent that gives in to the caprices and whims of his child is not really helping.
Disruptions in School
When it comes to the question of why kids should not have cell phones, the most obvious argument is the fact that it causes distractions at school. This is very apparent especially since most schools have implemented policies that ban cell phones during classes and school hours. According to some administrators, the problems with cell phones do not end with the interruptions it causes; it has also become a tool used for cheating in tests and quizzes. Letting these kids own cell phones is like tolerating cheating.

Given that there are advantages to letting children have their own cell phones, parents, however, should first consider the reasons why kids should not have cell phones and assess for themselves if the pros greatly outweigh the cons.
