Parents worry all the time about their children, especially when their kids are away from home. This is why most parents jump at the opportunity of being able to contact their kids at all times. They want that peace of mind that comes along the idea that their kids can contact them in case of emergencies especially since these kids are always out and about with all their activities. It’s safe to argue then that kids need cell phones and this is why more and more parents are getting cell phones for their children.
Advantages
There are many advantages to letting kids have their own cell phones. As was stated above, through the cell phones, parents are able to contact their kids any time and have that peace of mind that their children are safe. Apart from this, letting kids have their own cell phones is also a way of giving them a shot at taking responsibilities. It’s one way of training them how to wisely manage their time and calls.
Disadvantages
Although a lot of people agree that kids need cell phones, there are also drawbacks to letting them have their own handsets. For one thing, these kids could use their cell phones carelessly, even when they’re at school or in class. Some school administrators even went as far as banning the usage of cell phones during school hours. Another possible issue regarding cell phones is that students might use it as a tool for cheating during tests and quizzes.

Since the advantages of cell phones greatly outweigh the disadvantages and there’s no question regarding the fact that kids need cell phones, still, parents should address the issue these devices are creating. For instance, they can set a limitation as to what time of the day the phone can be used, as well as the minutes of calls they can make. Through this, the kids would learn to value their privilege.
