For Kids’ Cell Phones, Parental Controls should be Implemented

picture17It’s truly amazing what cell phones can do these days.  Aside from making phone calls, you can send text messages, browse the internet, play games, snap pictures and listen to music.

Teach Responsibility

For your tween (a child between 8-12 years old), it is a good idea to give him a cell phone in order to test if he’s responsible enough to take care of it.  However, parental control should be implemented at all times.

For new models of kids’ cell phones, parental controls are already integrated in the unit.  Examples are Firefly Mobile Phone, LG Migo, and TicTalk.

Teach your tween that digital images captured by cell phones may compromise someone’s privacy.  So make sure that you explain what images he is prohibited to take.

Moreover, since text messaging is privately done, you may not be able to monitor the type of messages he sends.  Just discuss with him that he should only exchange messages with people he trusts.

Unlike other phones that looked like plastic or toys, the Disney phone is designed better.  It has a lot of whistles and bells, including camera with flash, camcorder, and a color screen.

Your kids can customize display screens and ring tones, as well as download whatever games they want.  The exterior display shows caller ID and time and it even has voice-dialing.

Disney Phone Features

If you will compare the features of other kids’ cell phones, Disney Mobile might probably be your favorite.  You would like the “family alerts” – the text messages pre-programmed into this handset.

Aside from this, you can also authorize only certain numbers to dial out and call in.  Moreover, you can control when and how the phone will be used such as setting a limit to the number of minutes that your child can use in a given time.

Walkie-Talkie Phone

Among the kids’ cell phones, TicTalk functions and looks more like a walkie-talkie than a regular phone.  It does not have a keypad.  Instead, it is equipped with monochrome LCD screen showing remaining battery life, time, and caller ID.

What is the Right Age to Give Kids Cell Phones Handset?

picture14It is great that companies are making child-friendly phones today.  These restricted handsets are safe to introduce to a child.

At an early age, you can teach your children the responsibilities of owning kids cell phones handset.  You are also making them aware of call costs as well as teaching them to look after their phone themselves.

Too Young

However, don’t you think that children are starting way too young in owning their first phone?  Recent study shows that the average age of children receiving a cell phone from their parents is 5 years old.

Actually, the right age to give these handsets to children is a debatable issue.  Some parents will say that 5 is too young, and children should get their first phone only at age 11 or 12.  While for others, the moment that children start to go to school or have friends, they should be tracked properly.
